Banksy and the Problem With Sarcastic Art. By DAN BROOKS SEPT. 10, 2015. The day Banksy unveiled “Dismaland” — a sprawling exhibition of conceptual art that is itself a concept, with mock security guards and mouse-eared employees instructed to con s frown instead of smile — its ticketing website was so overwhelmed it crashed. Hours before the opening of the shower scene park, which is built on a disused resort in Weston-super-Mare, England, hundreds of animal, people had lined up outside in symbol, the rain. “Dismaland” is a heartening display of public interest in animal con s, conceptual art, even if the important concept is con s “What if Disneyland were as bad as real life?” In the why was days that followed, online media struggled to decide whether the art was worthy of its audience. Animal? Banksy had called the why was shakespeare project, which includes his work as well as that of animal, others, “a family theme park unsuitable for monarch, small children.” Mark Brown, an animal con s art correspondent for The Guardian, called it “sometimes hilarious, sometimes eye-opening and occasionally breathtakingly shocking.” Mike Nudelman, the absolutist monarch graphics editor at con s Business Insider, described it as “bad and in everyday life, boring” and likened Banksy to animal con s the director Michael Bay. “Dismaland Is Not Interesting, and prose essay, Neither Is Banksy,” declared a Huffington Post Canada headline on animal con s a story that concluded: “It’s bad. It’s bad, and psychology symbol, it’s uninteresting.” Once again, Banksy has put the animal con s art enthusiast in a bind. Rebuilding Hurracane? “Dismaland” is spectacular, but its ideas are not everything you want a candidate for history’s largest work of conceptual art to con s be.
For example, one of shakespeare, its most remarked-upon installations is a wreck of animal, Cinderella’s carriage: Her body dangles luridly from the window, lit by the flashes of a paparazzi scrum. Wife Prologue? That’s a reference. It’s not exactly ironic, nor is it funny. Con S? But it’s built like a joke: Like Cinderella, Diana became a princess by marriage. Also like Cinderella, Diana took a famous ride, but her fairy tale turned gruesome — what if Cinderella’s had ended the shakespeare same way? That’s not exactly an insight, but it has a certain quality. Darren Cullen, a contributing artist for “Dismaland,” may have put it best: “This place is con s brilliant,” he told The Guardian. “It is just amazing having this much sarcasm in absolutist monarch, one place.” Ah, sarcasm: the very highest form of animal con s, wit. In the dictionary, “sarcasm” is still defined as the absolutist monarch use of animal, irony to convey contempt. But what we call sarcasm, especially on psychology the Internet, has become less a technique than an con s attitude: a contempt so settled that it doesn’t bother constructing ironies.
I submit that this sarcastic attitude, which presents itself as the perspective of a knowing few, is prose essay actually one of the animal dominant aesthetics of important, our age. Con S? Sarcasm is shower scene our kitsch. The problem of animal, kitsch has vexed aesthetes since at least the 19th century, when industrial production introduced a new level of cultural expression between folk traditions and high art. Meet? The term originated in 1920s Germany to describe cultural products that were excessively garish or sentimental. Animal Con S? “Kitsch is mechanical and operates by shower scene, formulas,” Clement Greenberg wrote in “Avant-Garde and Kitsch” in 1939. Con S? “Kitsch is vicarious experience and faked sensations.” The defining feature of kitsch is shakespeare that it preys on animal our desire to feel art succeed. It follows the formula of meaningful expression and exploits our willingness to manufacture the sensation of meaning. How wonderful, after all, to see a painting and be moved. As a species of prose essay, contemporary kitsch, sarcasm takes advantage of our readiness to con s respond to actual wit. It, too, is mechanical and proceeds by examples of conformity in everyday, formula. And online sarcasm is now industrially produced, thanks to the mass quantities of animal, content that digital media must churn out each day. Rebuilding After Hurracane? The style of Internet writing often called snark participates in sarcasm, typically by adopting the animal con s derisive tone of satire without the complex irony. You can find this sort of why was shakespeare important, writing anywhere, on almost any topic.
Picking more or less at random, I found this sentence from a Wonkette story about the Oath Keepers, a constitutionalist group that recently interceded in a mining dispute in animal con s, Montana: “George Kornec and Phil Nappo have a mining claim on federal land; they’ve put up a garage and shower scene, a fence, and the dastardly government is con s pushing its weight around and being a big bully and Essay on We Meet Again, being really terrible and stuff by con s, telling Kornec and why was shakespeare important, Nappo to take them down.” An error has occurred. Please try again later. Animal Con S? You are already subscribed to this email. Of Conformity Life? That’s technically irony, because the animal con s literal meaning (the government is shower scene abusing its power) is animal the opposite symbol of the meaning implied (the Oath Keepers are overreacting). Animal? But the on We Meet Again inversion is applied mechanically, artlessly, in a way that does not encourage the reader toward a deeper truth. Animal Con S? There’s no insight here to raise this irony to prose essay the level of animal, satire.
There is wife only mockery, backed by con s, certainty that the prose essay reader shares the author’s contempt. Sarcasm is a natural fit for partisan news aggregators, because it relies on a calculated appeal to shared attitudes. Kitsch banks heavily on con s these shared attitudes. It substitutes them for artistic insights, and it relies on its audience’s agreement with them to produce a feeling similar to monarch profundity. Animal? Sarcasm works best when people already know what you mean. Symbol? By the con s same token, you don’t have to forensic psychology think society has become crass and animal, venal to enjoy Banksy, but it helps. Like other forms of kitsch, Banksy’s work presents conventional wisdom as insights: It’s true we have treated our princesses ghoulishly, particularly when their carriages crash. Wife? As with memes, Banksy asks us to substitute the sensation of recognizing a reference for con s, the frisson of wit. And he sometimes seems to Essay Hurracane Katrina operate by animal con s, formula, as the forensic symbol Twitter account @BanksyIdeas points out. “Stencil of a child assembling the toy from a Kinder Egg, yeah?” goes one such parody idea. “The parts fit together to make a handgun.” This open indulgence in kitsch may be why the aspirational Internet — the knowing Internet that defines itself in opposition to a perceived, less savvy mainstream — seems to con s hate him. It is the narcissism of of bath's, small differences.
Like Banksy, the animal highbrow, left-leaning Internet frequently indulges in sarcasm; how else could it produce so much ostensibly clever content every day? But such attitude-based aggregators distinguish themselves from the kitschy Internet by why was, embracing the premise that cultural production can improve an unjust society, whereas Banksy’s premise seems to animal be that cultural production can point out psychology symbol how awful everything is. Online media’s distaste for animal con s, Banksy seems like a disagreement of shakespeare important, ends rather than means. The Huffington Post article “35 HELPFUL Things Banksy Could’ve Done Instead of ‘Dismaland,’” for animal con s, example, indicts his cynicism while embracing the sarcastic mode: Items 33 to 35 on psychology symbol the list are “Shut up,” “Don’t” and “Gah.” Even among its nominal opponents, the animal con s problem of how to of bath's prologue respond to animal con s kitsch persists. If you love art, you must be glad that thousands of people are supporting it by prose essay, going to “Dismaland.” If you love cultural expression generally, you must be glad millions of people are participating in it on the Internet.
But when you see bad expression praised as good — when your Facebook friends share a sarcastic news report, or a millionaire street artist puts mouse ears on an actress and tells her to frown — you must also feel some injustice has been done. Animal Con S? Kitsch should not get away with exploiting people’s desire to feel the art. How wonderful it must feel to Essay on We Again go to “Dismaland” and con s, see through society! But how awful to psychology see society embrace art that makes you feel nothing, that makes you think only animal con s about the vast chasm between you and life, everyone else. We#8217;re interested in animal, your feedback on monarch this page.

resume nprobe The NIH/EPA Chemical Information System. STEPHEN R. HELLER. Environmental Protection Agency, PM-218. Washington, DC 20460. National Institutes of animal, Health. Bethesda, MD 20014. Over the past seven years, NIH and Essay After Katrina EPA have developed a computer based Chemical Information System (CIS), which is an online interactive computer system that handles chemical and toxicological data (1). The CIS consists mainly of a collection of animal con s, numeric (as opposed to bibliographic) data bases and software to search these data bases. The four main areas of the CIS can be grouped as follows: 1. Essay! Searchable numeric data bases.
2. Structure and animal Nomenclature Search system (SANSS) 3. Chemical Substance Information System (CSIS) 4. Analysis and why was shakespeare important Modeling Programs. The first three areas will be described, with emphasis on the linking of areas 1 and 2. Figure 1 shows how the four areas of the CIS are coordinated, with the Structure and Nomenclature Search System (SANSS) in the center. At present there are 25 data bases in the SANSS. These comprise the CIS Unified Data Base (UDB) and con s are searchable by the SANSS (2).
They are shown in Figure 2. The referral aspects of the CIS represent a valuable tool for scientific and administrative work both within our respective Agencies as well as outside these Agencies, in the public and private sector, here in the USA and abroad. The referral capability of the CIS consists of a list of data bases, literature references (e.g., Merck Index) and Government Regulatory files, which can all be accessed simultaneously by consulting a single central file. All the available information concerning a substance can be located in a single operation. As a number of wife of bath's prologue, data bases is increased, the CIS becomes more valuable and animal con s a time-saving device in searches for chemical information. Typical questions that can be readily and inexpensively answered by this approach are: * Has this chemical been sold as a pesticide in the USA? * Is there a measured acute toxicity value for prose essay a particular air pollutant? * Is information concerning a drug taken in overdose quantities and animal con s identified by Essay Meet Again gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in the Merck Index or the NIMH book on psychotropic drugs?
* Has a certain chemical been registered for animal sale in prose essay the USA? Figure 1. Animal Con S! List of the current 25 collections which currently comprise the CIS unified data base (integrated SANSS data base 3/1/78) Among the data bases being added to the CIS this year are those shown in Figure 3. Prose Essay! Over the next 2-3 years, with the continued addition of files that are either generated or used by the Government, it is expected that the animal list of referral files will grow to Essay on We Meet Again over 250. Con S! With the recent efforts of the Essay Meet Again four main Federal regulatory Agencies (EPA, FDA, CPSC, OSHA) to coordinate their various activities, such as the study and regulation of specific chemicals, this central referral system takes on more importance. This four-Agency group, known as the Interagency Regulatory Liaison Group (IRLG) (3), is now working to use the animal Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) Registry Number as the standard chemical identifier for the chemicals in all the four Agencies. An internal regulation has been proposed which will make this mandatory. The regulation is modeled after EPA Order 2800.2, currently the only Government regulation to mandate standardized chemical classification (4). Over the past four years, some 170,000 chemical names have been submitted to CAS, under contract to EPA, to obtain the of conformity CAS Registry Numbers for these chemicals. The result of this massive and animal costly effort is the CIS Unified Data Base (UDB) of about 101,000 unique chemicals associated with the 25 files shown in Figure 2. That there is so much overlap of the of bath's chemicals found in these files in not surprising.
It is beginning to con s appear that there are relatively few chemicals which are actually studied in any detail, and even fewer that become significant in commerce, as, for example, drugs, food additives or pesticides. Essay Meet Again! Projections suggest that by con s the time the why was shakespeare important CAS registration process of some 250 files is completed, the actual size of the CIS unified Data Base will not exceed 175,000-200,000 substances. Con S! The need then will be to obtain as much useful and accurate information about these substances as is necessary to wife of bath's prologue protect health and environment in the USA, as is required by the missions of our respective Agencies. It is our hope that by defining the size or scope of the real universe of chemicals, that the animal con s burden on industry will be lessened and that future efforts will be easier to direct. Thus, we see little immediate need to study the universe that CAS has defined, of over Hurracane, some 4,000,000 chemicals found in animal con s the literature that CAS has abstracted since 1965. Only about 12% of these four million have appeared more than once in examples of conformity the CAS abstracted literature and probably no more than 3% are produced and sold in anything but research quantities. Structure and Nomenclature Search System (SANSS) The Structure and Nomenclature Search System (SANSS), the heart of the CIS, is based upon the work of Feldmann who developed the original search algorithms a number of years ago (5). Addition of a nomenclature search program, an identity search program and a search program based on the Edgewood CIDS structure keys (6), as well as some considerable refinement of the system has been carried out over the last few years. Con S! The SANSS and its data base, connection tables from CAS and chemical names, has absorbed the Rebuilding Katrina bulk of the con s CIS budget. Currently, the SANSS can be used in a number of wife, ways. The more important methods are: * Nomenclature Search (NPROBE) * Ring Search (RPROBE) * Fragment Search (FPROBE) * CIDS Code Search (SPROBE) * Molecular Weight Search (MW) * Molecular Formula Search (MF) * Substructure Search (SUBSS) * Full Structure Search (IDENT) In addition to these searching programs, there are a number of animal, retrieval and display options available in the system.
These include: * Display of Chemical Structure. * Display of CAS Collective Index names. * Display of synonyms, common names and. * Display of molecular formulas. * Display of files containing a substance. * Retrieval based upon CAS Registry Number. The following sections will be devoted to explaining the various SANSS nodules and giving examples of how they can be used. At the Essay Meet end of the chapter an example of the interfacing of the SANSS with the NIOSH RTECS data base of acute toxicity data (7) will be described, as an animal example of the direction that CIS development is taking. Since there is considerable interest on the part of the chemical industry in the implementation of Essay on We, TSCA, access to the bulk of the public data that EPA will be using in its work for administering TSCA should be of value. At present, development of the animal con s SANSS is being directed towards the immediate needs of EPA's Office of Toxic Substance (OTS), so that the foundation that has been build for the SANSS can be used most effectively for the implementation of TSCA.
Name - Nomenclature Search (NPROBE) The name search, NPROBE, has been implemented as a result of requests expressed by both the SANSS user community and the CEQ-TSCA MITRE study proposal (8) for Essay Again the development of a Chemical Structure and Nomenclature System which we have called the animal Structure and Nomenclature Search System. The software used is of bath's prologue similar to that used in the CHEMLINE system at the National Library of animal, Medicine (NLM) and allows for complete or partial (fragment) name search. There are an average of slightly over 3 names per why was shakespeare chemical in CIS UDB, as opposed to slightly more than 2 names per chemical in CHEMLINE (9). Animal Con S! The CHEMLINE file, which links primarily to the TOXLINE literature references, is made up mostly of research chemicals, and Essay Meet thus is not likely to have the multiple synonyms that are associated with commercial chemicals. In the CIS UDB, which is con s comprised of files from primarily regulatory, and hence commercial, sources, there are the expected additional names associated with materials in commerce. To conduct a nomenclature search, the user simply enters a chemical name or name fragment, as shown in Figure 4. The example shown in Figure 4 is of a search for any substance in the UDB whose name contains the fragment DDT. From Figure 4 it can be seen that there are 12 such substances in the UDB, of why was, which the first, p,p' DDT, is shown in the Figure. In addition, also shown in this figure are all the files of the UDB which contain information on animal con s, p, p' DDT, with the local file identifier numbers listed so that one may go directly to the particular file and get the information that is contained in that file regarding p,p' DDT.
In Figure 5, a name search for Essay After Hurracane the name fragment LSD was performed on the entire UDB and five examples were found. The first of these five is shown in Figure 5, with the names of the files that have information about LSD. Not surprisingly, the animal con s files include the of conformity in everyday NIMH List of Psychotropic Drugs, the Merck Index and the NIOSH acute toxicity data base, as well as the NIH/EPA Mass Spectral Data Base and the TSCA Candidate List. There is little doubt that the inclusion on the TSCA Candidate or Strawman list will be changed once the final TSCA inventory is published, since under present law, LSD is an illegal chemical substance. This is a useful search technique, but requires a large list of synonyms, a correct spelling, and a knowledge of how chemical names are broken down. For example, the animal con s searching for a cyclohexanedione, if the file name of the substance is written as 2, 5-dione, a search for examples of conformity in everyday dione will not find the chemical. Functional Group - CIDS Key Search (SPROB) The best way to animal con s search for functional groups or structure features in the CIS SANSS is to examples of conformity in everyday use the Chemical Information Data System (CIDS) keys, developed by Edgewood Arsenal. Animal Con S! The CIDS keys, a few of which are shown in Figure 6, are the basis of a rapid and efficient way to search the CIS UDB for substances containing a particular functional group or structure feature. Prose Essay! Many of the CIDS keys are quite specific in nature, as can be seen in Figure 6. Others, shown towards the animal con s bottom of Figure 6, are quite generic in nature. For example, the CIDS key FG25 refers to the presence of a nitrile or cyanide group in the molecule.
An example of a CIDS key search is given in Figure 7, where a search is shown for all cyclohexyl (SCN49) morpholine (SCN35) compounds in the NIOSH RTECS data base of acute toxicity. There are only of conformity in everyday two such compounds in the data base, and the first of these is printed out in the figure, along with its local NIOSH RTECS identifier numbers indicated. Figure 4. NPROBE name search for name fragment DDT Figure 5. NPROBE name search for LSD. Figure 7. CIDS key search for cyclohexyl morpholine compounds.
Molecular Weight (MW) and Formula (MF) Search. In addition to searching for a particular functional group using the CIDS keys as shown above, it is possible to search for a compound, or a group of compounds, using molecular weight. The molecular weight search, shown in Figure 8, allows for either a specific molecular weight, or, as is indicated in the figure, a range of molecular weights. Animal Con S! In the prose essay particular example shown in Figure 8, the Merck Index is being searched for all occurrences of compounds with a molecular weight between 368 and 380. There are 167 such substances as can be seen in con s the top part of Figure 8. In Everyday Life! This is too large a number and so it was decided to try to narrow or filter the search down to a smaller number using a molecular formula search.
In this case what was really sought were all compounds which have two oxygen atoms and a molecular weight between 368 and 380. In figure 8 a search for this partial formula (02) is shown, and this is animal followed by a Boolean AND logic operation (INTERsect) between the prose essay file of 167 compounds with the correct molecular weight range and the file of 1484 having the correct partial formula. The result of animal con s, this AND operation is a file containing the of bath's 16 compounds in the Merck Index which have a molecular weight between 368 and 380 as well as exactly two oxygen atoms in the molecule. At the bottom of Figure 8, the first of the animal 16 answers is printed out. This compound, with a molecular formula of C21.H23.C1F.N.02 and a molecular weight of 375, is Essay Rebuilding After Katrina Haloperidol, which is a drug used as a sedative and tranquilizer. In the event that there is no interest in chlorinated compounds, even though they may meet the molecular weight and molecular formula criteria, a further molecular formula search may be conducted, as show in Figure 9, for compounds with 1-4 chlorine atoms.
From Figure 9, it can be seen that there are 986 compounds with 1-4 chlorine atoms in the Merck Index file. Since the requirement was for compounds that did not contain this halogen atom, a Boolean NOT operation between the 986 chlorine containing compounds and the 16 compounds previously found is performed, as seen in the center of Figure 9. This results in the removal of three of the sixteen substances, and of the animal remaining thirteen, the first one, Androsta-3, 5-dien-17-ol, 3-(cyclopentyloxy)-17-methyl-, (17.beta.), is printed out and shown at the bottom of Figure 9. This, of prose essay, course, like the other twelve in animal the file, does not contain the chlorine that was present in three of the answers to the first search shown in monarch Figure 8. The ability to interact and impose various limitations and con s filters on searching is a very powerful capability of the SANSS. Figure 8. Molecular-weight range search. Figure 9. Sample of combination searches of MF, MW with NOT logic. Nucleus - Ring Search (RPROBE)
One of the features of the CIS SANSS that has made the system useful is the structure of the examples file with respect to ring system. Animal! The SANSS has a hierarchical file structure that allows for rapid and of bath's inexpensive searching for con s specific rings or ring system. In figure 10, a list of some of the commands used to prologue generate structures are given. Con S! To show the SANSS works and how one can use the various query modules, the in everyday life remainder of the chapter will be devoted to searching through the NIOSH TTECS data base for chemicals having an aromatic ring, substituted on ortho carbons with chlorine and animal con s bromine respectively. The first thing that must be done in order to perform such a search is to build the query structure that is to sought. This is in everyday done with the first few commands shown in Figure 11.
The query structure in animal con s Figure 11 is wife of bath's prologue a chloro bromo (ortho) substituted benzene ring, but the ring probe search will be conducted for any ortho disubstituted aromatic ring, since it does not take into account the nature of the substituents. Also, since other substituents on the benzene ring will be permitted, it is necessary to animal reset the substituent search level from EXACT (only two substituents and these must be ortho to EMBED (there must be two ortho substituents at a minimum.) The command to do this is EXIM, which is short for Exact/EMBED switch. The search shown in Figure 11 reveals that there are 2715 compounds in the NIOSH RTECS file that contain at least this ring pattern. To filter such potentially broad responses further, one can use CIDS keys searches and other such constraints as shown below. Fragment Search (FPROBE)
One feature necessary to any structure search system is the Essay After Katrina ability to search for animal con s atom-centered fragments. Wife! In a fragment search the user must specify an atom and its neighbors. The exact (or generic) nature of the bonds between this central atom and con s each of its neighbors is then entered and a search is conducted for all occurrences of absolutist monarch, such a fragment. If a query structure has already been generated, as was done in Figure 11, that structure can be used by the SANSS program to generate and search for fragments. There are usually a number of animal con s, atoms in a query structure that can be considered as central to a fragment. Hence, a request for Essay on We a fragment probe of the substructure shown in Figure 11 would lead to searches for six fragments, four of which would be the same (i.e. atom centered fragments about atoms 3, 4, 5 and 6 are all the same, representing a carbon atom in an aromatic ring attached to con s two other aromatic carbon atoms in the ring and Meet a hydrogen.) Such fragments are not very specific, and so it is best to identify the atom centered fragment for which one wishes to animal con s search. In Figure 12, atom number 1 is selected and a search for all occurrences of a chlorine atom on an aromatic ring is performed. The result of Essay on We Again, this search is a file containing all 1618 compounds in the NIOSH RTECS file that contain this particular structure fragment. After the fragment search is conducted for the chloro aromatic fragment, a similar search is animal con s performed on the fragment centered about atom 2, which contains a bromo substituent.
This fragment probe (FPROBE) search, shown in Figure 13, results in wife of bath's prologue 229 occurrences of this fragment in compounds in the NIOSH RTECS data base. Figure 10. Commands used to generate structures for animal con s searching. Figure 11. A ring-probe (RPROBE) search for a disubstituted benzene. Figure 12.

Example of NIOSH RTECS toxicity data retrieval. Substructure Search (SUBSS) The Substructure Search option is an atom-by-atom, bond-by-bond comparison between connection tables in the data base and the connection tables corresponding to the query structure. This time consuming, sequential search is quite costly, and so the ring probe, fragment probe, and animal con s other search techniques described above are used as screen to speed up the process and reduce the cost. Following the three separate searches done in Figures 11-13, the next step is to see which compounds in the NIOSH RTECS data base contain occurrences of all three. This is done by absolutist a simple Boolean AND logic combination of the animal con s three lists of absolutist, Registry Numbers generated by the searches in these Figures. The intersection of the lists, performed by the INTER command as shown in Figure 14, results in 12 compounds meeting the criteria of all three searches. However, not necessarily all of the 12 answers are precisely what is wanted. This is because the con s three searches in Figures 11-13 are for pieces of the on We Again structure sought but the searches do not require these pieces to be in animal con s the same juxtaposition as in the query structure. This is, the three requirements comprise as necessary, but no sufficient condition for an answer to the original question. To secure an prose essay exact answer as to how many (if any) of these 12 compounds meet the exact query structure, it is necessary to perform a true substructure search (SUBSS) as is shown in animal con s Figure 14.
The result of the use of SUBSS shows that only 7 of 12 answers from the Essay on We Meet intersection of the three searches do have the bromine and chlorine ortho to one another on the benzene ring. Animal Con S! Of the 7 answers, one is shown in Figure 15. As it turns out from inspection of all 12 prior answers (not shown here), the other compounds retrieved are meta substituted chloro bromo aromatic compounds. Complete Structure Search (IDENT) The final SANSS module to be described in shakespeare important this chapter is the animal search for a total or full structure, rather than a substructure. This module was designed primarily for the purpose of searching for and reporting specific chemicals as part of the TSCA inventory reporting procedures. The full structure search, called IDENT (for IDENTity), has and will continue to have specific application to TSCA activities. For example, after the final grandfather inventory required under section 8 of the prologue Act is animal published and made available, via the CIS, as well as by other means, it will be necessary for potential vendors of a chemical to determine if the Essay Rebuilding Katrina chemical they wish to see or manufacture is in the Inventory and can thus be produced and marketed without extensive pre-manufacturing testing. Use of the IDENT search will quickly reveal if the chemical is in con s the TSCA inventory.
Of course, one can use the name search capabilities, but there is no guarantee that the name used by absolutist monarch the manufacturer will be in the list of synonyms associated with the inventory. Animal Con S! The structure shown in Figure 16 was generated using the standard SANSS structure generation commands, such as those listed in Figure 10. The IDENT search was then invoked and absolutist after being told that the structure had the normal number of hydrogen atoms, consistent with normal valence, it found the structure in the CIS UDB. The structure was then printed out, with all the local file identifier information, as well as a number of synonyms, one of animal con s, which is the TSCA Clerical Code Designation number for the substance. SANSS-Data Base Interfaces. A structure or a nomenclature search is generally only a means to wife prologue an end. The end is often some data associated with the structures found. In order to facilitate retrieval of such information, an interface between the CIS numeric data bases and the SANSS has been constructed. This allows for a search through the animal con s UDB followed by a data search (or retrieval) and permits one to answer such queries as: * Do any ortho bromo-chloro aromatic compounds have a toxicity greater than 1.0 mg./kg?
In the shakespeare important example shown in Figure 17, the first three answers from the previous search are used to retrieve the toxicity data associated with these compounds. Animal Con S! The Difficult Transition from Military to Civilian Life. Military service is difficult, demanding and con s, dangerous. But returning to civilian life also poses challenges for the men and women who have served in shakespeare important the armed forces, according to a recent Pew Research Center survey of con s, 1,853 veterans. While more than seven-in-ten veterans (72%) report they had an easy time readjusting to civilian life, 27% say re-entry was difficult for them—a proportion that swells to examples, 44% among veterans who served in the ten years since the con s Sept. On We! 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Why do some veterans have a hard time readjusting to civilian life while others make the transition with little or no difficulty? To answer that question, Pew researchers analyzed the attitudes, experiences and demographic characteristic of veterans to identify the animal con s factors that independently predict whether a service member will have an easy or difficult re-entry experience. Using a statistical technique known as logistic regression, the analysis examined the impact on re-entry of Rebuilding After Hurracane Katrina, 18 demographic and attitudinal variables. Four variables were found to significantly increase the animal likelihood that a veteran would have an easier time readjusting to civilian life and six factors predicted a more difficult re-entry experience. According to examples, the study, veterans who were commissioned officers and those who had graduated from college are more likely to have an easy time readjusting to animal con s, their post-military life than enlisted personnel and those who are high school graduates.
1 Veterans who say they had a clear understanding of their missions while serving also experienced fewer difficulties transitioning into civilian life than those who did not fully understand their duties or assignments. In contrast, veterans who say they had an emotionally traumatic experience while serving or had suffered a serious service-related injury were significantly more likely to report problems with re-entry, when other factors are held constant. The lingering consequences of a psychological trauma are particularly striking: The probabilities of an easy re-entry drop from Essay, 82% for those who did not experience a traumatic event to con s, 56% for those who did, a 26 percentage point decline and the largest change—positive or negative—recorded in this study. 2. In addition, those who served in a combat zone and those who knew someone who was killed or injured also faced steeper odds of an examples in everyday, easy re-entry. Con S! Veterans who served in the post-9/11 period also report more difficulties returning to civilian life than those who served in Vietnam or the Korean War/World War II era, or in periods between major conflicts. Two other factors significantly shaped the re-entry experiences of post-9/11 veterans but appear to have had little impact on of bath's prologue, those who served in previous eras.
Post-9/11 veterans who were married while they served had a significantly more difficult time readjusting than did married veterans of animal con s, past eras or single people regardless of when they served. At the same time, higher levels of religious belief, as measured by frequent attendance at religious services, dramatically increases the shakespeare important odds that a post-9/11 veteran will have an easier time readjusting to civilian life. According to the analysis, a recent veteran who attends religious services at animal con s least once a week has a 67 percent chance of having an easy re-entry experience. Among post-9/11 veterans who never attend services, the probability drops to 43%. 3 Among veterans of other eras, current attendance at Essay Rebuilding After Katrina religious services is animal not correlated with ease of re-entry. 4. Eight other variables tested in the model proved to be poor predictors of how easily a veteran made the Essay After Katrina transition from con s, military to civilian life. They are race and ethnicity (separate variables tested the examples life effect of being white, black, Hispanic or some other race); age at time of discharge; whether the animal veteran had children younger than 18 while serving; how long the veteran was in wife the military; and con s, how many times the veteran had been deployed. This analysis employs a statistical technique known as logistic regression to measure the effect of any given variable on the likelihood that a veteran had an easy or difficult time re-entering civilian life while controlling for the effects of all other variables. To identify the factors that best predicted an easy re-entry, eighteen independent variables were included in the regression model. Of Bath's Prologue! The variables were chosen based on their predictive power in previous research.
The demographics were: veteran’s age at animal discharge; how long the individual served; the veteran’s education, race and ethnicity (tested as four separate variables: white, black, Hispanic or some other race); whether the veteran was married or had young children while in the service; highest rank attained; and era in which the examples life veteran served. Other variables tested the impact of specific experiences on re-entry: whether the veteran had been seriously injured while serving; experienced a traumatic or emotionally distressing event; served in animal con s a combat or war zone; or served with someone who had been killed or injured. A question that asked veterans whether they understood most or all of the missions in which they participated also was included. Of the of conformity in everyday life 18 variables in the model, ten turn out to be significant predictors of a veteran’s re-entry experience. Four were positively associated with re-entry: being an officer; having a consistently clear understanding of the missions while in the service; being a college graduate; and, for post-9/11 veterans but not for con s, those of prose essay, other eras, attending religious services frequently. Six variables were associated with a diminished probability that a veteran had an easy re-entry. They were: having a traumatic experience; being seriously injured; serving in the post-9/11 era; serving in a combat zone; serving with someone who was killed or injured; and, for post-9/11 veterans but not for those of other eras, being married while in the service. Factors that Make Readjustment Harder.
Overall, the survey found that a plurality of all veterans (43%) say they had a “very easy” time readjusting to their post-military lives, and 29% say re-entry was “somewhat easy.” But an additional 21% say they had a “somewhat difficult” time, and animal con s, 6% had major problems integrating back into civilian life. Among the monarch 18 variables tested, veterans who experienced emotional or physical trauma while serving are at the greatest risk of having difficulties readjusting to civilian life. According to the analysis, having an emotionally distressing experience reduces the chances that a veteran would have a relatively easy re-entry by 26 percentage points compared with a veteran who did not have an emotionally distressing experience. Similarly, suffering a serious injury while serving reduces the animal probability of an easy re-entry by 19 percentage points, from 77% to 58%. Overall, the survey found that serious injuries and exposure to emotionally traumatic events are relatively common in the military. Nearly a third (32%) of all veterans say they had a military-related experience while serving that they found to be “emotionally traumatic or distressing”—a proportion that increases to 43% among those who served since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. About one-in-ten veterans (10%) suffered a serious injury; of those who served in the post-9/11 era, 16% suffered a serious injury, in absolutist part because service members with serious injuries are more likely to survive today than in previous wars, when those with serious injuries died.
The survey also pinpoints some of the specific problems faced by returning service members who suffered service-related emotional trauma or serious injury. More than half (56%) of all veterans who experienced a traumatic event say they have had flashbacks or repeated distressing memories of the experience, and nearly half (46%) say they have suffered from post-traumatic stress. Animal Con S! 5 Predictably, those who suffer from PTS were significantly less likely to say their re-entry was easy than those who did not (34% vs. 82%). According to the model, serving in a combat zone reduces the examples in everyday life chances that a veteran will have an easier time readjusting to civilian life (78% for those who did not serve in a combat zone to slightly more than 71% for those who did). Knowing someone who was killed or injured also lessens the probability that a veteran will have an easy re-entry by six percentage points (73% vs. 79%). Many veterans who served after Sept. 11, 2001, have experienced difficulties readjusting to civilian life. The model predicts that a veteran who served in the post-9/11 era is 15 percentage points less likely than veterans of other eras to have an easy time readjusting to life after the military (62% vs.
77%). A word of caution about comparing re-entry experiences between service eras. Those in the post-9/11 era were interviewed relatively soon after they left the animal military, and their views could reflect the immediacy of wife of bath's prologue, their experience and animal, could change over time. For earlier generations of veterans, their views could have changed from what their views were at a similar point in their post-military lives. Also, the Essay overall view of veterans of earlier eras could change as members of con s, this generation die and the composition of the Essay Rebuilding Katrina cohort becomes different.
As a consequence, these results are best interpreted as the views and experiences of con s, current living veterans from each era, and not necessarily the views each generation held in the years immediately after leaving the service. The analysis produced a surprise. Post-9/11 veterans who were married while they were in the service also had a more difficult time readjusting to life after the Essay on We Meet Again military. Overall, being married while serving reduces the chances of an easy re-entry from 63% to 48%. At first glance, this finding seems counterintuitive. Con S! Shouldn’t a spouse be a source of examples of conformity in everyday, comfort and support for animal, a discharged veteran? Other studies of the general population have shown that marriage is associated with a number of benefits, including better health and higher overall satisfaction with life. 6. In fact, the answer to absolutist, another survey question points to con s, a likely explanation. Post-9/11 veterans who were married while in the service were asked what impact deployments had on their relationship with their spouse. Nearly half (48%) say the impact was negative, and why was, this group is con s significantly more likely than other veterans to have had family problems after they were discharged (77% vs.
34%) and to of conformity, say they had a difficult re-entry. Among those married while they were in the service, about con s, six-in-ten (61%) post-9/11 veterans who had experienced marital problems while deployed also had a difficult re-entry. In contrast, about why was important, four-in-ten veterans (39%) who reported that deployments had a positive or no impact on animal, their marriage say they had problems re-entering civilian life—virtually identical to the proportion of why was, then-single post-9/11 veterans (37%) who experienced difficulties re-entering civilian life. Taken together, these findings underscore the strain that deployments put on animal con s, a marriage before a married veteran is prose essay discharged and con s, after the veteran leaves the service to rejoin his or her family. Factors that Improve the prose essay Chances of an Easy Re-entry. Three variables tested in the model—rank at the time of discharge, how well the con s mission was understood and absolutist monarch, education level—emerged as statistically significant predictors of an animal, easy re-entry experience for all veterans. A fourth variable, religiosity as measured by service attendance, is a powerful predictor of an easier re-entry experience for post-9/11 veterans but not for those who served in earlier eras.
The model predicts that commissioned officers are 10 percentage points more likely than enlisted personnel to Essay After Katrina, experience few if any difficulties readjusting to animal, life at home (85% vs. Absolutist Monarch! 74%), 7 when all other factors are held constant. Veterans who say they clearly understood their missions while serving also were more likely than those who did not to have an easier re-entry (77% vs. 67%). 8. College-educated veterans also are predicted to have a somewhat easier time readjusting to animal con s, life after the military than those with only absolutist monarch a high school diploma. According to the analysis, a veteran with a college degree is five percentage points more likely than a high school graduate to have an animal, easy time with re-entry (78% vs. 73%). Again, a word of caution is in order. Absolutist! Veterans in the survey were asked how many years of school they have attended. Some of these college graduates may have earned their degree well after their discharge from the service.
Among the larger factors influencing the re-entry experience of post-9/11 veterans is animal con s religious faith, as measured by wife, how often a recent veteran attends religious services. Recent veterans who attend services at least once a week are 24 percentage points more likely to say they had an easy re-entry back into civilian life than those who never attend services (67% vs. Con S! 43%). This finding is consistent with other studies of the shakespeare general population that suggest religious belief is correlated with a number of con s, positive outcomes, including better physical and emotional health, and happier and more satisfying personal relationships. 9. The impact of religious observance vanishes if the sample is based only on those who completed their service before Sept. 11, 2001. In fact, there is of bath's prologue barely a one percentage point difference in the probability of an easy re-entry between older veterans who currently attend religious services and those who never do. As noted earlier, one reason for the absence of an con s, impact may be related to the question measuring current attendance at religious services. This measure of attendance may be a good proxy for the religious convictions of more recent veterans.
But it may be a poor estimate of shakespeare, how religious older veterans were immediately after they were discharged from the service. Over the years the religious belief of these older veterans may have changed, obscuring the impact of animal con s, religious conviction on their re-entry experience. An advantage of logistic regression analysis is that it estimates the effect of each variable controlling for the impact of all other variables in the model. For example, service in combat significantly increases the chances of having a difficult time adjusting to life after the military irrespective of the Rebuilding Katrina effect of being injured, having a traumatic experience while serving or any of the other positive or negative factors included in the model. Similarly, being a college graduate increases the predicted chances of an easy re-entry—over and above the impact of con s, rank, religiosity and Rebuilding After Hurracane Katrina, other variables tested. #8617; Most of the estimated effects reported in this study are based on the change in probability between a veteran with a given experience or demographic characteristic (a commissioned officer, served since Sept.
11, 2001, was seriously injured) and those who did not have these experiences or characteristics. For some variables, the reported estimates are based on contrasts between two different levels of animal, that variable. For example, the estimated effect of why was, education on animal con s, re-entry is of conformity based on the contrast between those who are college graduates and those whose formal education ended with high school graduation. The impact of other education levels was used to model the effect and was estimated but not reported. #8617; A possible explanation of the animal con s absence of an shakespeare important, effect on older veterans is that the religion question asked how often a respondent currently attends religious services. Animal Con S! For older veterans, this measure may not be a good indicator of religious belief at the time they were discharged. #8617; To estimate the examples life impact of church attendance and marital status while serving on recent veterans, the animal con s model was rerun using only the sample of those who served after Sept. 11, 2001. Wife! #8617; For a more detailed look at animal veterans’ experiences with PTS and other emotional problems, see “The Military-Civilian Gap: War and Sacrifice in the Post-9/11 Era,” Pew Research Center, Oct. 5, 2011.

Animal! #8617; For summaries of scholarly research into the benefits of marriage, see Thomas A. Hirschl, Joyce Altobelli, and Mark R. Rank, “Does Marriage Increase the Odds of Affluence? Exploring the Life Course Probabilities,” Journal of Marriage and Family, Vol. 65, No. 4 (November 2003), pp. Why Was Shakespeare Important! 927–938, or Allan V. Horwitz, Helene R. White, and animal con s, Sandra Howell-White, “Becoming Married and Mental Health: A Longitudinal Study of a Cohort of Young Adults,” Journal of Marriage and Family, Vol. 58, No. 4 (November 1996), pp. Essay Meet! 895–907. #8617; These probabilities have been rounded.
The actual percentage-point difference is slightly more than 10 percentage points. #8617; This variable was included in the model in an attempt to see if veterans who clearly understood their assignments and con s, missions in the military had an easier or harder time readjusting to examples of conformity, civilian life than those who did not have a clear understanding. It is animal con s possible that the causal relationship may flow in of conformity in everyday the other direction; that is, having an animal con s, easy or difficult re-entry may shape veterans’ judgments about their military experience, including their attitude toward the missions they served. Omitting this variable from the analysis produces no significant changes in wife the model. #8617; For a summary of animal, some of the benefits of marriage, see “The Psychological and Physical Benefits of Spiritual/Religious Practices” by Rutgers University sociologist Ellen L.
