negtive homework Copyright 2002 by Elizabeth Yeow. Included here with permission of the author. #9;Every fall excitement fills the air as students arrive at Electronic Performance Monitoring school with new backpacks and school supplies, eager to meet their new teacher. Always a new beginning, the start of school allows every student to have a fresh beginning and make this year the does the establishment clause of the amendment best year ever.

Yet within weeks of the start of school, teachers begin to see a certain pattern emerging: the same students repeatedly neglect to turn in Performance Essay, homework. The teacher will then remind, reprimand, take away recess, and , threaten to call home and talk to their mom and Performance, dad. Occasionally, this will work and the student will miraculously appear with homework in hand, most of the time there are just excuses. More often, the character based ethical teacher becomes more frustrated and disheartened, the student#146;s grades drop and he or she will feel like a failure. Performance Monitoring! The repetition of this scenario caused me to really consider the value and effect of homework. Free Referencing! Every year, and this year is no exception, I have at least one student, usually two, who never bring their completed homework back on time. I was puzzled by these students#146; attitudes towards homework. Electronic Essay! I wanted to understand more about free referencing their perceptions of homework and to find out what kind of support they were receiving at home.

Perhaps, these students do not understand the homework or maybe their parents are unable to help them. Maybe the instructions were unclear or the homework is Performance Essay too difficult for them. I wanted to understand more about their parents#146; views about school and homework. I also wanted to know more about other issues that may be going on at home. What are some things that I could do to help them bring their homework back? As I began this study, I had several assumptions. I saw homework is an important part of Essay their schoolwork and is a reinforcement of what is learned at school.

This extra practice is helpful to students and when students do not do their homework it affects how they do in Monitoring, school. Also, lack of finished homework may be an indication of their attitude towards school or learning. I teach at Clara Barton Elementary School (pseudonym), a public elementary school in the suburbs of a metropolitan area, about based ethical theory 15 miles outside of Washington, DC. At the beginning of this school year Clara Barton Elementary School switched from a traditional school calendar to a year round calendar. On the Performance year round calendar school is in session for nine weeks and then there is a two or three week intersession break. During the intersession remediation and enrichment classes are offered to students. The cost of attending intersession is five dollars. The community around Clara Barton Elementary School is comprised of single family homes, townhouses, and multifamily dwellings. The majority of the students that attend Clara Barton Elementary School live in the townhouse community directly behind the school.

The townhouse community accepts Section 8 housing certificates. Performance Essay! Many of the townhouses house more than one family. There is a high transience rate at Clara Barton Elementary School of about 40 percent. Seventy-five percent of the school is composed of ethnic- and language-minority students. More than 22 countries and many different languages are represented at Clara Barton Elementary School. Many of the students that attend Clara Barton Elementary School are from low-income families. Clara Barton Elementary School receives funding from Title I and many of the students receive free or reduced lunches. The school is organized primarily into self-contained classrooms. The school does not have a formal homework policy, but in Monitoring, the staff handbook there is a recommended amount of time students should spend on homework based on grade level. Third grade students should have between 30-60 minutes of homework per evening.

The school slogan is Clara Barton Reads and students are encouraged to read 20 minutes at what does the establishment of the amendment provide? home every night as part of their homework. This is my fourth year teaching and I have taught third grade at Clara Barton Elementary for all four years. I am an Asian female. The students in Electronic, my class are all in the third grade. The class is composed of 18 students, 8 boys and 10 girls. ! Sixteen out of the 18 are ESOL students. Electronic Performance Essay! Eight of the students speak Spanish at home, 5 speak Vietnamese, and 1 speaks another language. Homework in delivery sheffield, my classroom is assigned Monday through Thursday evenings and usually includes spelling, reading, and math. When students arrive at school in the morning they take out their homework and stack it on a table at the back of the room. While they are putting their backpacks, books, and jackets away I check in Electronic Performance Monitoring Essay, their homework.

Any student who does not bring in completed homework has to finish their homework during free activity time. Selecting a Focus Group. As I looked over Monitoring, my homework grade sheet I noticed that I had three students, all boys, who repeatedly did not bring in their homework. Two of the does clause of the first provide? boys, Jose and Electronic Performance, Juan (pseudonyms), are Hispanic and free referencing, one, Aaron (pseudonym), is Electronic African-American. Originally I decided to look at all three students, but then Juan moved mid-year. So, I had two students to focus on, but the more I collected data and reflected I realized that I really was focusing more on Jose. Electronic Performance! Due to time constraints and the inability to contact Aaron#146;s mother I decided to focus this study about the establishment clause first amendment Jose. #9;Jose is a third grade, ESOL student. His primary language is Spanish; however he is very fluent in English. Jose has helped translate a few words for me before. Electronic! He is the Essay on The Liberty of Freedom oldest child in his family and has one younger sibling who is Essay not old enough yet for similes in poems school.

He lives with his mother, father, grandmother, and Electronic Essay, younger sister. His father and Essay Liberty, mother both work full-time. His father often has to work night shifts and Performance Monitoring Essay, sometimes does not get to see Jose much because of his work schedule. Similes In Poems! Jose has attended Clara Barton Elementary School since kindergarten and Electronic Performance, lives in the townhouse community behind the Liberty of Freedom school. Jose loves to draw during his free moments and will frequently take out a notebook and draw action figures. Jose takes Tae Kwon Doe classes in the evenings and frequently talks about how he enjoys these classes. He is well-liked at school and has many friends, both boys and Performance Monitoring Essay, girls, in his class.

He is reading on Essay on The Liberty of Freedom grade level, but his writing and math are below grade level. Electronic Monitoring! Frequently Jose needs short extensions on in-class assignments. As I considered my puzzlement over students#146; attitudes towards homework I realized there may be many different things contributing to this puzzling situation. My own beliefs and values may be contributing to this puzzling situation. Perhaps my expectations for completed homework are too high or I am giving too much homework. My expectation that students should have and Monitoring Essay, do homework may be influenced by clause first, my experience with homework as a child. #9;In the last thirty years the controversy over the value of Electronic Performance Monitoring Essay homework has come up again and again. Depending on the decade there are either demands for similes more homework or cries for less homework.

Proponents for homework believe that it can help students retain more, improve study skills, and teach students that learning can take place anywhere. In addition, homework can promote independence and responsibility and it can help parents connect with what their children are learning in school. Opponents of homework believe that homework can hinder children from participating in other beneficial activities, such as sports or scouts. In addition, parental involvement with homework can confuse students if their parents use techniques that are different than their teachers. Homework can also accentuate the disparity between students from low-income homes and students from middle-class homes.

Students from low-income homes may have more difficulty completing an assignment (Cooper, 2001). It is also possible that there is a cultural mismatch between what is emphasized at The Incarceration of Women Essay home and what is Electronic Performance Monitoring Essay emphasized at school. My belief that homework is on The of Freedom important and should be given Monday through Thursday nights is also emphasized by Monitoring Essay, the administration at my school. Perhaps Jose#146;s parents do not value schoolwork and homework as much as it is similes in poems emphasized in school. They may feel that homework is Essay repetitious and unnecessary for their child.

Maybe they feel they can provide more authentic learning after school for their children by providing them with cultural, athletic, or other experiences. Parents may feel that these other activities will benefit their child more and may therefore not stress homework. It is also possible that parents may not value school and this feeling is conveyed to students. Outside influences may also affect Jose. Perhaps he has seen older friends or relatives who do not do their homework. He may view these older ones as cool or maybe he has seen kids on television or in movies that do not do their homework. Another outside influence might be the Electronic Performance Essay economic situation of the family.

The family may be struggling to make ends meet and there may be difficulties at home that are a higher priority to students than homework. #9;These cultural influences are important for me to look at because they could change the way I administer homework or the amount of homework that I give. After considering all of the possible cultural influences, I decided to narrow them down to the two that I believe to be the most significant. The two cultural influences that I thought might be the most applicable to my puzzlement are teacher beliefs (CIP 3.1) and Performance Monitoring, a cultural mismatch between home and school (CIP 3.3.2). Essay On The Liberty! My beliefs as the teacher affect my giving of homework, my expectation that it be done, and how much I actually assign to students.

I believe that one of the strongest influences on young children is their family and their home. Since young children are still very much under the direct charge of their parents, if they bring in their homework or not is especially dependent on their parents. Their parents have control over whether or not they are given time after school to complete homework. The school culture emphasizes an importance on homework and this may not coincide with parental beliefs or practices. This discord will ultimately affect how a child is perceived by his/her teacher and how successful he/she is academically. In order to determine what cultural influences were contributing to my puzzlement I needed to gather information about my beliefs. I chose to look at these by journaling, a technique recommended in Performance Essay, the Cultural Inquiry Process (Jacob, 1999).

In my journaling I needed to consider why this situation was puzzling to me and does the establishment of the amendment, why I think this situation is Electronic Performance happening. My beliefs, background, and previous experience influence how I look at this puzzling situation and how I approach this situation. If I can identify my beliefs and referencing, values then I can see how they might be contributing to the puzzling situation. After reflecting and journaling about my homework beliefs I had the opportunity to discuss the mcdonalds delivery topic of Electronic Performance Monitoring my research with my colleagues at school. Through this discussion I realized that I should ask them what their beliefs were about homework and based ethical, find out how much homework the delivery sheffield other third grade teachers were giving (CIP 4.1). #9;Information also needed to be gathered about Electronic Monitoring Essay a mismatch between the similes student#146;s home culture and the school curriculum (CIP 4.3.2). The school or the school district might have a homework policy that I am unaware of.

If there is a homework policy then there is not a strong emphasis on it and Performance Monitoring, it does not seem to influence teachers and how often or how much homework they give. In Poems! Weisenthal, Cooper, Greenblatt Marcus, (1997) found that schools with a strong emphasis on Performance Monitoring Essay homework influenced how often teachers gave homework. I realized it was important to look at similes the school culture and then to look at Electronic Essay the home culture and see if there was a mismatch. In order to find out more information about Jose#146;s home culture I considered visiting his home but I had difficulty contacting his parents. Electronic! I sent many notes home, called home and tried to leave messages. Eventually I was able to speak to Jose#146;s father. I also interviewed students using a modified version of The Student Survey of Homework Practices (Grajria, M. Salend, S. J., 1995) to try to determine what the home environment and culture was like as well as to find out what their attitude was toward homework. I looked at Jose#146;s school history and contacted Jose#146;s second grade teacher to see what Jose had been like as a second grader. #9;I grew up in Essay, an environment where receiving and doing homework was part of a daily routine. Performance Monitoring! Teachers gave me homework, my parents expected that I would have it done, and if I did not do it I felt horrible.

My parents always made sure that my homework was done when I was in elementary school. By the time I reached middle school and high school I had acquired the habit of doing homework independently. Does The Establishment Of The First Amendment Provide?! I have always believed that homework helps students learn and reinforces concepts. The question I have to ask myself in this puzzlement is Do I know for Electronic Monitoring sure that homework benefits students? In order to answer this question I decided to look at some research that has been done on the benefits or detriments of homework. The correlation between completing homework and academic achievement has been the subject of much research.

Depending on in poems which side of the homework argument one is on, research can have both positive and negative effects on students. According to Cooper (2001) some positive academic effects of homework include retention and Electronic Monitoring Essay, understanding of material, improved study skills, improved attitudes toward school. Some nonacademic effects of homework include promoting independent and responsibility in students and involving parents in what is going on in the classroom. Homework also has some negative effects, such as boredom, denying students leisure time and the benefits of wholesome learning from scouts or sports. Homework can lead to cheating and based ethical, can emphasize the disparity between the homes of Performance Monitoring Essay low-income and middle class students. Students from low-income homes may have to work after school or may not have a quiet place to study at home. What Does Of The Amendment! When looking at 50 studies done on homework and Performance Monitoring, student achievement, Cooper (2001) found that homework had little or no effect on student achievement at the elementary level. #9;After reading some research on the effects of homework on academic achievement I had to seriously consider how my beliefs fit into this. I realized that giving homework benefited me as the teacher.

These benefits matched the benefits teachers expressed having in the Homework Attitude and Behaviour Inventory for Teachers (Weisenthal et al., 1997). Homework improved my ability to cover the curriculum and acted as a kind of Essay bridge between the last lesson and the next one. Although homework benefited me, as the teacher, I found myself reconsidering why I was handing out homework to students. According to Kralovec and Buell (2001), elementary school students show no significant academic gain from doing homework. So, if homework was not helping students academically then how worthwhile was giving homework? #9; I found out that the other two third grade teachers, both males, at my school were not giving as much homework as I was. One teacher usually gave only spelling and reading as homework. Performance Essay! Every once in a while he would give math homework. The other third grade teacher usually gave math and reading as homework and rarely gave spelling homework.

I, on the other hand, gave math, spelling, and reading as homework. The Incarceration Of Women! Why weren#146;t the Electronic Monitoring Essay other teachers giving as much homework as I was? According to Weisenthal et al. (1997) some teachers may go easy on themselves so they have less homework to collect and to grade. I decided to go back and interview the other third grade teachers to find out what their beliefs about homework were. One of the free teachers did not believe that giving homework was a big deal unless a child did not understand the homework. He believed that homework should be given for Monitoring Essay students to build responsibility and for character building. In his experience the Electronic Monitoring ones that don#146;t bring their homework back are usually the ones that don#146;t understand the concepts. He also felt that at the elementary level if students pay attention in class then they will achieve and homework will not necessarily help them achieve. The other third grade teacher believed that homework should be a reinforcement of what is taught in in poems, school and he felt that it made a difference in their achievement at school. He said that he could tell the next day by student performance if a student did or did not do their homework.

He also believed that homework helped students learn to be responsible and build a good work ethic. After discussing homework policies and Electronic Performance Monitoring, their beliefs about homework with my colleagues I went to the principal and asked her if we had a school wide homework policy. She referred me to the staff handbook. Although there is not a school wide homework policy, there were some generally accepted principles that should govern teachers when assigning homework. Some of the principles include, flexibility and does the establishment clause first, differences in the assignments to individual students, homework should be reasonable in view of the pupil#146;s situation including health, housing conditions, outside work or responsibility, leisure-time activity and Performance Essay, conflicting demands of free home and school.

On the daily announcements students are encouraged to read for 20 minutes every night as homework. Performance Monitoring Essay! Any homework given out in addition to this is up to the individual teacher. I also looked through Homework Helper: A Guide for Teachers which was published by the school district. This guide was handed out at a staff meeting at the beginning of the school year and teachers were encouraged to use it as a guide. Free! Since that time homework has not been discussed with the staff. Performance! According to the guide the purpose of homework is to practice skills, reinforce academic concepts, extend learning, promote good study skills, apply new skills and concepts, involve parents, and develop positive attitudes toward school and learning. The guide does not discuss the amount of homework to be given. Any homework, aside from the based ethical theory daily reading, is up to the individual teacher.

#9;In order to gather more information about Jose#146;s home culture I tried to contact Jose#146;s parents through notes and phone calls home. After repeated attempts to contact Jose#146;s parents, his father appeared one afternoon at my classroom door. It appeared that he had finally received one of the many messages I left for him. I was very excited to meet with him, but wondered how the meeting would go as we did not have a translator. After a few minutes I thought it would be appropriate because it seemed that he had enough of similes in poems a grasp of the English language for us to be able to communicate without a translator. Our meeting was short (we really did need a translator). I asked him a few questions about his job and Jose#146;s behavior and work habits at home.

He seemed very responsive and concerned. Apparently Jose had been telling him since the beginning of the year that he did not have any homework. He had believed Jose and Electronic Performance Essay, did not try to contact me to confirm it. He and Liberty, his wife both worked long hours and many times he had to work the night shift. Often when Jose comes home his mother is at work and based ethical theory, his father is Electronic Essay either at on The Liberty work or sleeping. His grandmother, who speaks only Spanish, is there to watch him. Jose#146;s father said that he or his wife always asked Jose if he had finished his homework. Performance Monitoring! He did mention that one afternoon when he told Jose his friend had to go home he saw Jose give his friend a piece of paper that looked like homework.

His father didn#146;t ask about it and forgot about it until his meeting with me. The weekly notes that I had been sending home did not reach Jose#146;s parents either. Jose#146;s father suggested that he could sign Jose#146;s homework every evening and maybe this would help Jose do his homework and bring it to school. Electronic Performance Monitoring! The day after meeting with Jose#146;s father, Jose did not have his homework. He did bring his homework the next day signed by similes, his father, but since then he hasn#146;t had anything signed by either parent. #9;I realized through this brief interaction with Jose#146;s father that he and his wife both cared about Electronic Performance Monitoring their son and his success in school. However, I realized that they also had other things, such as tae kwon do lessons, that they wanted their son to learn. Gonz á lez (1995) points out how important it is for teachers to know their students#146; culture and to not have a prepackaged awareness of cultural diversity. They were providing nonacademic experiences for mcdonalds delivery sheffield their son that they felt were important for his development as a person. Electronic Performance Monitoring Essay! In addition, I realized that Jose#146;s father wanted his son to do his homework, but was very limited due to his work schedule to encourage and help Jose. I#146;m not sure why Jose#146;s mother did not return phone calls or come to school with Jose.

I have only seen Jose#146;s father with him when attending school events. Of Women Essay! Although Jose#146;s father indicated that they asked Jose about his homework they did not seem to do anything to encourage or require that Jose do his homework. Since they may not have been encouraging him to do his homework Jose may have been getting the message that homework was not valuable to his parents. #9;I contacted Jose#146;s second grade teacher to discuss his homework habits in second grade. I found out that he rarely brought in finished homework and Jose#146;s second grade teacher frequently tried to contact his parents to discuss work habits. She noticed that when his father had to work the night shift Jose came to school quite disheveled and without any homework. When Jose#146;s father switched to working during the day Jose seemed more attentive in school and sometimes was able to bring in finished homework. Jose#146;s achievement in school, including homework completion, seemed to be directly affected by Electronic Monitoring Essay, his father#146;s work schedule. Tapia (1998) indicated that the most important factor influencing poor students#146; academic performance is similes in poems family stability. Jose#146;s feeling of family stability seemed to be affected by seeing his father regularly during the afternoon and Electronic Performance, evening.

#9;To find out my class#146; attitude and based ethical, homework habits I passed out the Electronic Performance Homework Survey to my whole class and similes in poems, read it to them as they circled responses. I emphasized that this was not for a grade and they should answer exactly how they felt and not be worried about being wrong. Some sample questions from the survey are as follows: - I get easily distracted when I am doing my homework. - I feel unsure about which homework assignment to do first. - I feel teachers are unfair and give too much homework.

- Activities such as sports and Monitoring, music are more important to me than doing my homework. - Someone checks my homework for me when I am done. - Someone at home asks me if I have finished my homework. I handed out the surveys and the establishment clause of the first provide?, then read through each item and explained any of the questions that students did not understand. As I looked over the surveys I realized that my students were limited in Essay, their ability to self-report because of their young age and their self-reports may not be identical to their actual practices at home.

For example, Aaron reported that he always turned in his homework when he actually rarely turned in his homework. Nine students, half of the class indicated that they need someone to remind them to do their homework. Half the class indicated that they sometimes need help with their homework. Mcdonalds! It was interesting to note that Jose indicated that he does not like to do homework, many times feels he needs help with his homework, and Electronic Performance, he thinks homework is important only some of the time. Jose also indicated that he received daily reminders at home to do his homework, but despite these reminders he did not always do his homework. Interventions and Monitoring.

#9;One intervention I tried was to change homework assignments so there wasn#146;t as much of a mismatch between Jose#146;s culture and the school curriculum (CIP 5.3.2). Maybe Jose did not see the relevance of the homework that was given and needed homework that was more meaningful. Kravolec and Buell (2001) found homework could be very disruptive of family life. Electronic Performance Essay! It can interfere with what parents want to teach their children and punish children in poverty from being poor. Parents may have cultural and religious beliefs or life skills that they feel are important for their children to learn, but homework may interfere with the limited time they have with their children to share those beliefs or skills. Electronic! Since Jose frequently talked about Tae Kwon Do lessons and other things that he did during the week with his parents, I realized that it was important to them for their son to be trained in some kind of Monitoring sport. They might also feel that as a growing boy Jose needed some physical activity after school. Although Jose indicated that his parents asked him about his homework they did not ask to see his homework. They believed him when he said he did not have homework or that he had finished his homework. It is possible that they did not have the time or energy to look at his homework.

They both worked long hours and it is possible that they had many daily survival demands that are more important than Jose#146;s elementary school homework. Since outside influences can not always be controlled or changed, I realized that interventions had to be made at the school or classroom level to help students (CIP 5.4.1). It seemed that Jose was not getting the support that he needed from home because his parents#146; time is occupied with work and other basic survival issues, so one intervention was to give less challenging homework. Although all the homework I give students should be able to do independently, he had indicated on his Homework Survey that he needed help a lot. So, I modified his homework and noticed that he started turning in part of his homework.

His parents#146; limited English may affect Jose, so I tried to give more homework that was self-explanatory and made sure that he understood all the directions before he left school. Another intervention I tried was to allow Jose to begin his homework at school. I let him start his homework at school. I noticed that the next day sometimes the only part he would have to turn in delivery sheffield, was the part he had started in school. Jose seemed to have difficulty getting his homework from school to home and then back to school. Essay! So, I gave Jose a checklist with a Velcro check that he could move when he had completed a task.

The checklist was to help him write his homework down, collect the materials he needed for home, put them in his backpack. Referencing! His father was given a matching one to keep at home. Before leaving to go home everyday he had to make sure to check in with me so I could check his backpack. Of Women Essay! After receiving the checklist I watched Jose everyday and noticed that he wasn#146;t following it. I reminded him and encouraged him to use it, but he still didn#146;t use it. On a daily basis I continue to check Jose#146;s backpack and give verbal reminders to use his homework checklist. Of Women! He lost the Velcro check for his end-of-the-day checklist on his desk, so I gave him a new one, but he still hasn#146;t used it.

He has gotten used to checking with me before leaving. For about two weeks I reminded him that he needed to see me before he walked out the door. Now he remembers on his own that he has to show me his homework inside his backpack. He comes up to me with his backpack open and similes, his homework at the top so I can see it. I send informal weekly progress reports home to his parents so that they know how he is doing in mcdonalds, school and whether or not he has been turning in his homework. Summary and Implications. After all the interventions and monitoring I can say that Jose turns in his homework about half the Electronic Performance time. For the delivery sheffield first half of the year he rarely turned in Essay, any homework assignments and similes in poems, the ones he turned in were usually unfinished.

He seems to have more of an understanding that for me doing homework is just as important as doing work in school. Electronic! I also have a better understanding of his home situation and that although his parents want him to do well in school they also have other things that they feel are important for Jose to learn. The communication between home and school is definitely better. In addition I feel that I am more aware that the situation at home greatly affects students#146; ability to work on homework and bring it back to school. This inquiry and research on the benefits and negative effects of homework on mcdonalds delivery students like Jose has really caused me to rethink why I give homework and Electronic Essay, the amount of homework I give. What The Establishment Of The Amendment Provide?! I realized that my beliefs and values about homework really contributed to my puzzlement. It's also important to be faithful to the text when you're using direct quotations from the passage. Misquoting or badly paraphrasing the author’s words weakens your essay, because the evidence you’re using to Performance Monitoring support your points is faulty. Higher Level: Understanding of Central Ideas. The next step beyond being factually accurate about the passage is showing that you understand the central ideas of the text and how details of the passage relate back to this central idea. Why does this matter? In order to be able to explain why the author is persuasive, you need to be able to explain the structure of the argument. And you can’t deconstruct the author's argument if you don’t understand the central idea of the passage and how the details relate to it. Here's an of Freedom example of a statement about our fictional hot dogs are sandwiches passage that shows understanding of the central idea of the passage: Hodgman’s third primary defense of why hot dogs are not sandwiches is that a hot dog is not a subset of any other type of Electronic Monitoring Essay food. He uses the analogy of asking the question “is cereal milk a broth, sauce, or gravy?” to does amendment show that making such a comparison between hot dogs and sandwiches is patently illogical.

The above statement takes one step beyond merely being factually accurate to explain the relation between different parts of the passage (in this case, the relation between the what is cereal milk? analogy and the hot dog/sandwich debate). Of course, if you want to score well in all three essay areas, you’ll need to do more in your essay than merely summarizing the author’s argument. This leads directly into the next grading area of the SAT Essay. The items covered under this criterion are the most important when it comes to Electronic Performance Essay writing a strong essay. You can use well-spelled vocabulary in sentences with varied structure all you want, but if you don't analyze the author's argument, demonstrate critical thinking, and support your position, you will not get a high Analysis score . The response offers little or no analysis or ineffective analysis of the source text and The Incarceration of Women Essay demonstrates little or no understanding of the analytic task. The response identifies without explanation some aspects of the author’s use of evidence, reasoning, and/or stylistic and persuasive elements, and/or feature(s) of the student’s choosing, Or numerous aspects of the response’s analysis are unwarranted based on the text. The response contains little or no support for claim(s) or point(s) made, or support is Performance Monitoring Essay, largely irrelevant. The response may not focus on features of the text that are relevant to addressing the mcdonalds delivery, task, Or the response offers no discernible analysis (e.g., is largely or exclusively summary). The response offers limited analysis of the source text and demonstrates only Electronic Essay, partial understanding of the analytical task.

The response identifies and attempts to what does the establishment first provide? describe the Electronic Performance Monitoring Essay, author’s use of Essay evidence, reasoning, and/or stylistic and persuasive elements, and/or feature(s) of the Performance Monitoring Essay, student’s own choosing, but merely asserts rather than explains their importance, or one or more aspects of the response’s analysis are unwarranted based on free, the text. The response contains little or no support for Performance claim(s) or point(s) made. The response may lack a clear focus on those features of the text that are most relevant to addressing the task. The response offers an effective analysis of the source text and demonstrates an The Incarceration of Women understanding of the analytical task. The response competently evaluates the author’s use of evidence, reasoning, and/or stylistic and persuasive elements, and/or feature(s) of the student’s own choosing. The response contains relevant and sufficient support for claim(s) or point(s) made. The response focuses primarily on Monitoring Essay, those features of the text that are most relevant to The Incarceration of Women Essay addressing the task. The response offers an insightful analysis of the Monitoring, source text and demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of the character based, analytical task. The response offers a thorough, well-considered evaluation of the Performance Monitoring Essay, author’s use of evidence, reasoning, and/or stylistic and persuasive elements, and/or feature(s) of the student’s own choosing.

The response contains relevant, sufficient, and the establishment amendment provide? strategically chosen support for claim(s) or point(s) made. The response focuses consistently on Electronic Performance Monitoring Essay, those features of the The Incarceration of Women Essay, text that are most relevant to addressing the task. Because this category is so important, I've broken it down even further into its two different (but equally important) component parts to make sure everything is Performance, as clearly explained as possible. Critical thinking, also known as critical reasoning, also known as logic, is the skill that SAT essay graders are really looking to see displayed in the essay. What The Establishment Clause First Provide?? You need to be able to evaluate and analyze the claim put forward in the prompt.

This is where a lot of students may get tripped up, because they think “oh, well, if I can just write a lot, then I’ll do well.” While there is some truth to Electronic Performance Monitoring Essay the assertion that longer essays tend to score higher, if you don’t display critical thinking you won’t be able to get a top score on your essay. What do I mean by critical thinking? Let's take the previous prompt example: Write an essay in which you explain how Hodgman builds an argument to free referencing persuade his audience that the hot dog cannot, and never should be, considered a sandwich. An answer to this prompt that does not display critical thinking (and would fall into a 1 or 2 on Electronic, the rubric) would be something like: The author argues that hot dogs aren’t sandwiches, which is free, persuasive to the reader. While this does evaluate the prompt (by providing a statement that the author's claim is persuasive to the reader), there is no corresponding analysis. Electronic Performance Monitoring Essay? An answer to this prompt that displays critical thinking (and would net a higher score on the rubric) could be something like this: The author uses analogies to hammer home his point that hot dogs are not sandwiches. Because the Essay, readers will readily believe the first part of the Electronic Essay, analogy is based, true, they will be more likely to Electronic Performance accept that the second part (that hot dogs aren't sandwiches) is true as well.

See the difference? Critical thinking involves reasoning your way through a situation (analysis) as well as making a judgement (evaluation) . On the what does the establishment of the amendment, SAT essay, however, you can’t just stop at abstract critical reasoning - analysis involves one more crucial step. Part II: Examples, Reasons, and Other Evidence (Support) The other piece of the puzzle (apparently this is a tiny puzzle) is making sure you are able to Electronic Performance Monitoring back up your point of view and critical thinking with concrete evidence . The SAT essay rubric says that the best (that is, 4-scoring) essay uses “ relevant, sufficient, and strategically chosen support for claim(s) or point(s) made. ” This means you can’t just stick to abstract reasoning like this: The author uses analogies to Essay on The Liberty of Freedom hammer home his point that hot dogs are not sandwiches. Because the readers will readily believe the Electronic Performance, first part of the analogy is Essay of Freedom, true, they will be more likely to accept that the second part (that hot dogs aren't sandwiches) is true as well. That explanation is a good starting point, but if you don't back up your point of view with quoted or paraphrased information from the Electronic Essay, text to support your discussion of the way the author builds his/her argument, you will not be able to get above a 3 on the Analysis portion of the essay (and possibly the Reading portion as well, if you don't show you've read the passage).

Let's take a look of an example of how you might support an interpretation of the author's effect on the reader using facts from the character ethical theory, passage : The author’s reference to the Biblical story about King Solomon elevates the debate about Monitoring, hot dogs from character, a petty squabble between friends to Electronic Monitoring Essay a life-or-death disagreement. The reader cannot help but see the parallels between the two situations and thus find themselves agreeing with the delivery sheffield, author on Electronic Performance Monitoring, this point. Does the author's reference to King Solomon actually elevate the Liberty, debate, causing the reader to agree with the author? From the Electronic Essay, sentences above, it certainly seems plausible that it might. While your facts do need to be correct, you get a little more leeway with your interpretations of how the author’s persuasive techniques might affect the audience. As long as you can make a convincing argument for the effect a technique the author uses might have on the reader, you’ll be good. The response shows a weak control of the Performance, conventions of standard written English and may contain numerous errors that undermine the quality of sheffield writing. The response demonstrates little or no cohesion and limited skill in the use and control of language. The response may lack a clear central claim or controlling idea or may deviate from the Electronic, claim or idea over the course of the response. The response may include an ineffective introduction and/or conclusion. The response may demonstrate some progression of ideas within paragraphs but not throughout the response.

The response has limited variety in free referencing sentence structures; sentence structures may be repetitive. The response demonstrates general or vague word choice; word choice may be repetitive. Electronic Performance Essay? The response may deviate noticeably from a formal style and objective tone. The response shows a limited control of the conventions of standard written English and contains errors that detract from the quality of writing and may impede understanding. The response maintains a formal style and objective tone.

The response demonstrates a deliberate and highly effective progression of ideas both within paragraphs and throughout the essay. The response has a wide variety in sentence structures. The response demonstrates a consistent use of precise word choice. The response maintains a formal style and objective tone. The response shows a strong command of the similes in poems, conventions of standard written English and Electronic Performance Monitoring Essay is free or virtually free of errors.

Because there's a lot of different factors that go into calculating your Writing score, I've divided the discussion of this rubric area into what does the establishment first provide?, five separate items: One of the most basic rules of the Performance Essay, SAT essay is that you need to express a clear opinion on the assignment (the prompt) . While in character theory school (and everywhere else in Performance Essay life, pretty much) you’re encouraged to take into account all sides of a topic, it behooves you to NOT do this on the SAT essay. Why? Because you only have 50 minutes to read the passage, analyze the author's argument, and write the essay, there's no way you can discuss every single way in which the based ethical theory, author builds his/her argument, every single detail of the passage, or a nuanced argument about what works and what doesn't work. Instead, I recommend focusing your discussion on a few key ways the author is successful in persuading his/her audience of his/her claim. Let’s go back to the assignment we've been using as an example throughout this article: Write an essay in which you explain how Hodgman builds an argument to persuade his audience that the Electronic Performance, hot dog cannot, and never should be, considered a sandwich. Your instinct (trained from many years of schooling) might be to answer: There are a variety of ways in which the author builds his argument.

This is similes in poems, a nice, vague statement that leaves you a lot of wiggle room. If you disagree with the Performance Essay, author, it's also a way of avoiding having to mcdonalds say that the author is persuasive. Electronic Performance? Don't fall into this trap! You do not necessarily have to agree with the clause amendment provide?, author's claim in order to analyze how the author persuades his/her readers that the claim is true. Here's an Electronic Performance Monitoring Essay example of a precise central claim about the example assignment:

The author effectively builds his argument that hot dogs are not sandwiches by using logic, allusions to history and mythology, and Monitoring factual evidence. In contrast to on The Liberty of Freedom the vague claim that There are a variety of ways in which the author builds his argument, this thesis both specifies what the author's argument is and the ways in which he builds the argument (that you'll be discussing in the essay). While it's extremely important to make sure your essay has a clear point of view, strong critical reasoning, and support for your position, that's not enough to get you a top score. You need to make sure that your essay demonstrates a deliberate and highly effective progression of ideas both within paragraphs and throughout the essay. What does this mean? Part of the way you can make sure your essay is well organized has to do with following standard essay construction points. Don't write your essay in one huge paragraph; instead, include an introduction (with your thesis stating your point of view), body paragraphs (one for each example, usually), and a conclusion. Electronic Monitoring Essay? This structure might seem boring, but it really works to keep your essay organized, and the more clearly organized your essay is, the easier it will be for the essay grader to understand your critical reasoning. The second part of this criteria has to do with keeping your essay focused, making sure it contains a deliberate and highly effective progression of ideas.

You can't just say well, I have an Monitoring Essay introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, so I guess my essay is organized and referencing expect to get a 4/4 on your essay. You need to Electronic Performance Monitoring make sure that each paragraph is also organized . Essay? Recall the sample prompt: “Write an essay in which you explain how Hodgman builds an argument to Electronic Performance Monitoring persuade his audience that the hot dog cannot, and never should be, considered a sandwich.” And our hypothetical thesis: The author effectively builds his argument that hot dogs are not sandwiches by using logic, allusions to history and mythology, and factual evidence. Let's say that you're writing the paragraph about the author's use of logic to persuade his reader that hot dogs aren't sandwiches.

You should NOT just list ways that the author is logical in Electronic Monitoring support of his claim, then explain why logic in general is an effective persuasive device. While your points might all be valid, your essay would be better served by connecting each instance of logic in the passage with an explanation of how that example of logic persuades the reader to agree with the author. Above all, it is similes, imperative that you make your thesis (your central claim) clear in Electronic Performance the opening paragraph of free your essay - this helps the grader keep track of your argument. There's no reason you’d want to make following your reasoning more difficult for the person grading your essay (unless you’re cranky and don’t want to Performance Monitoring do well on the essay. Listen, I don’t want to tell you how to live your life). In your essay, you should use a wide array of vocabulary (and use it correctly). An essay that scores a 4 in Writing on the grading rubric “demonstrates a consistent use of precise word choice.” You’re allowed a few errors, even on a 4-scoring essay, so you can sometimes get away with misusing a word or two. Based Theory? In general, though, it’s best to stick to using words you are certain you not only Monitoring Essay, know the meaning of, but also know how to use.

If you’ve been studying up on vocab, make sure you practice using the words you’ve learned in sentences, and have those sentences checked by someone who is good at writing (in English), before you use those words in an SAT essay. Creating elegant, non-awkward sentences is the thing I struggle most with under time pressure. For instance, here’s my first try at the previous sentence: “Making sure a sentence structure makes sense is the thing that I have the most problems with when I’m writing in mcdonalds a short amount of time” (hahaha NOPE - way too convoluted and wordy, self). Electronic Performance? As another example, take a look at these two excerpts from the hypothetical essay discussing how the author persuaded his readers that a hot dog is mcdonalds sheffield, not a sandwich: Score of 2: The author makes his point by critiquing the Electronic Monitoring, argument against him. Character Based Theory? The author pointed out the Essay, logical fallacy of the establishment of the first amendment provide? saying a hot dog was a sandwich because it was meat sandwiched between two breads. Monitoring Essay? The author thus persuades the reader his point makes sense to be agreed with and convinces them. The above sentences lack variety in structure (they all begin with the words the author), and the last sentence has serious flaws in what does of the amendment its structure (it makes no sense).

Score of 4: The author's rigorous examination of his opponent's position invites the reader, too, to consider this issue seriously. Electronic Performance? By laying out his reasoning, step by step, Hodgman makes it easy for the reader to follow along with his train of Electronic Performance thought and arrive at the same destination that he has. This destination is Hodgman's claim that a hot dog is character based theory, not a sandwich. The above sentences demonstrate variety in sentence structure (they don't all begin with the same word and Performance Monitoring Essay don't have the same underlying structure) that presumably forward the point of the essay. In general, if you're doing well in all the other Writing areas, your sentence structures will also naturally vary. If you're really worried that your sentences are not varied enough, however, my advice for working on mcdonalds delivery, demonstrating meaningful variety in sentence structure (without ending up with terribly worded sentences) is twofold: Read over what you’ve written before you hand it in and change any wordings that seem awkward, clunky, or just plain incorrect. As you’re doing practice essays, have a friend, family member, or teacher who is good at (English) writing look over your essays and point out any issues that arise. This part of the Electronic Performance Monitoring Essay, Writing grade is on The Liberty of Freedom, all about the nitty gritty details of Electronic Performance Monitoring writing: grammar, punctuation, and spelling . It's rare that an essay with serious flaws in this area can score a 4/4 in Reading, Analysis, or Writing, because such persistent errors often interfere with meaning (that is, persistent errors make it difficult for on The Liberty of Freedom the grader to understand what you're trying to get across). On the other hand, if they occur in small quantities, grammar/punctuation/spelling errors are also the Electronic, things that are most likely to be overlooked. If two essays are otherwise of equal quality, but one writer misspells definitely as definately and the other writer fails to explain how one of referencing her examples supports her thesis, the first writer will receive a higher essay score.

It's only when poor grammar, use of punctuation, and spelling start to Electronic Performance Monitoring Essay make it difficult to understand your essay that the graders start penalizing you. My advice for working on this rubric area is the theory, same advice as for sentence structure: look over what you’ve written to double check for mistakes, and Monitoring Essay ask someone who’s good at writing to look over your practice essays and based ethical theory point out your errors. If you're really struggling with spelling, simply typing up your (handwritten) essay into a program like Microsoft Word and running spellcheck can alert you to problems. We've also got a great set of Electronic Performance articles up on our blog about SAT Writing questions that may help you better understand any grammatical errors you are making. changing essays Change Theory in the 21 st Century. Advanced Organization Theory and Inquiry. Arkansas State University- Newport. Center for Excellence in Education. Arkansas State University. Change has occurred throughout history both when societies are ready for it and when they are not. This essay will attempt to discuss change as it relates to organizations today and in the future. Electronic? This discussion will begin with definitions of several different types of in poems change and how change relates to the process of education. Next, diffusion will be presented as well as how modern technology will affect diffusion.

The merits of Performance Monitoring Essay different strategies of planned change in today's climate will be explored in addition to the implications of organizational development in the 21 st century. Finally, the usefulness of Deming's ideas in our society today and specific trends that affect the process of change will be discussed. Individuals and Electronic Monitoring Essay organizations view change in a variety of ways. Doing something in a different way may constitute change for some whereas to mcdonalds sheffield, others change may mean a total restructuring of an Essay existing system. Does The Establishment First? There are several different ways in Electronic Monitoring which we view change (Jurrow, 1999). First, developmental change means to do something the same way but better. For example I may learn to be a better teacher by of Women Essay doing the Electronic Performance, same things I have always done but doing them in a way that is considered better. Secondly, I could find a completely new way to do the same thing I have always done. This would be considered transitional change. For example, I may teach the same material but do it in a totally different way such as using multimedia presentations, group work, or demonstrations rather than lecture. Thirdly, transformational change means doing something different by creating new structures and new processes to fit new objectives.

I may come up with a way to do something very different by completely changing the processes that I have been using. For example, I may begin to facilitate learning rather than teaching information to students, and I may do this by allowing them to research information on their own, thus, instituting a totally new procedure. Transformational change is probably more representative of what today's society is looking for. Organizations have seen both developmental change and transitional change come and go with very little lasting effects. What Does Clause Of The First Amendment Provide?? This may be a factor in motivating those leading our institutions to take a chance on transformational change. Education is the Key. It has been said that order will emerge out of chaos.

While this is probably true, it is also believed that societies can direct the forces of change to suit goals and Essay social values (Owens, 1998). Furthermore, it is believed that planned social change is supported by compatible educational systems. This means that the referencing, infrastructure of the educational system can be used to facilitate change in a positive way because it is the key to equality and equity in society. Performance Monitoring? For example, education can be the means by which one's financial or social position can be elevated in our society. Because educational organizations are expected to similes, transmit traditional values and also to be a vehicle for change, they must balance the Electronic, implications of mcdonalds delivery sheffield stability and change at Electronic Performance, the same time.

Many now believe that reforming the educational system is a waste of time and money because of the history of change attempts that have been undertaken. According to Owens (1998), reform efforts have not been effective in significantly altering the free referencing, core of organizational culture in schools. This is because the Performance, nucleus of the mcdonalds sheffield, core of organizational behavior is power. According to Friedman (1999), culture is the medium through which emotional processes work. Therefore, we must first understand the power of culture to shape beliefs of Electronic Performance Monitoring people who have the capacity to bring about change in education. School reform means to sheffield, give new form to a school changing it in fundamental ways (Owens, 1998). This will be necessary in Electronic Monitoring order to confront the attitudes that have developed in those who have lost faith in the procedures that have attempted change in the educational system over the past few years. It will be necessary to give up some of the power so that those who are involved in the institution will believe that there is a genuine desire to change the organization in a positive, meaningful way. Schools can change through direction from the outside or they may change from within (Owens, 1998). It will probably take the latter to does clause of the first amendment, facilitate organizational change that will last.

When those involved in the organization are involved in the decisions to change as well as how that change should come about, there is a greater possibility the Electronic, change will be supported on a continuous basis. The traditional means of change in education is one that involves the on The Liberty of Freedom, spread of new ideas and Performance practices, which is neither planned nor structured. It typically takes about fifteen years for an innovation to spread to about three percent of the mcdonalds delivery, school systems and Monitoring another twenty years for the change to what does the establishment clause of the, be diffused into an area about the size of an Electronic Essay average state (Owens, 1998). Free? In this way, change occurs very slowly and the pace of the change that does occur contributes to the attitude that nothing ever gets done with regard to change efforts in educational organizations. Greenfield and Ribbins (1993) point out that administrators and teachers are slow in adopting innovations. According to Owens (1998), the Performance Monitoring, strategy by based ethical theory which money is spent may have greater impact on change than things such as per pupil expenditure.

This supports the Electronic Performance, notion that including those involved in the institution in each process of the change can enhance the possibility of mcdonalds delivery change. When those working in the organization are given a voice in the change and Electronic Performance an opinion concerning how to similes, implement it, there is a greater likelihood that diffusion of that change may take place. Conversely, when change is mandated, those being controlled will not rally around the Electronic Monitoring Essay, cause. Invention and improvements of modern technology may have an impact on the rate at which change occurs. Technology now provides the potential to free referencing, transmit new information to an almost limitless number of individuals practically immediately. However, because of this capability, we must be more careful about what we consider appropriate innovations that are ready for diffusion. Strategies of Planned Change. There are several different ways to Electronic Performance Monitoring, approach planned change. Robert Chinn cited three strategic orientations useful in similes planning and Performance Monitoring Essay managing change as (1) empirical-rational strategies, (2) power-coercive strategies, and (3) normative-reeducative strategies (Owens, 1998).

Empirical-rational strategies focus on linking the findings of research to practices of education by improving communication between researchers and practitioners. This approach is based on Electronic Performance, the assumptions that: (1) new knowledge will be perceived by potential adopters as desirable and that (2) adopters will do what is desirable because it is in their own self interest. Therefore this theory hinges on of Freedom, the production of new research, the belief that this research will improve the organization, and that practitioners will be motivated to put forth the effort necessary to implement the new ideas. Power-coercive strategies of change differ from an empirical-rational approach in Performance Monitoring the willingness to use sanctions to obtain compliance. For example, under this strategy, rewards might be given to those who adapt ideas and practices while punishments may exist for in poems those who do not. This strategy does not support the philosophy that workers should have voice in developing, implementing, and managing planned change. A normative-reeducative strategy is based on an understanding of organizations and people in them that is different from the direction taken by other classical or bureaucratic philosophies. Those in the organization can deliberately shift the culture of the Performance Essay, organization toward desired change.

This can be done by encouraging those working in the organization to address and modify, if necessary, their own attitudes and beliefs about the change to be implemented. Concern should be taken when attempting to bring about lasting change through the use of power-coercive strategies. Both empirical-rational and normative-reeducative approaches seem to be better alternatives because of the increased involvement of those within the of Women Essay, organization either through acceptance or development of Monitoring Essay change procedures. Given the likelihood that organizations may have more success with lasting change when they include those involved in the organization, it seems that efforts toward organizational development must coincide with efforts to include everyone in the change process. According to Block (1993) allowing those in the organization to of Women, have a voice in every aspect of the organization promotes a sense of ownership in the institution that can facilitate positive change. Organizational Development is defined as a coherent, systematically-planned, sustained effort at self-study and Electronic Performance Monitoring improvement, focusing on referencing, change in formal and informal procedures, processes, norms of Monitoring structures, using behavioral science concepts (Owens, 1998). On The? Furthermore, several concepts that characterize the process are the goal of organizational development, system renewal, a system approach, focus on Electronic Performance Essay, people, an educational strategy, learning through experience, dealing with problems, a planned strategy, a change agent, and involvement of similes top-level administration (Owens, 1998). The goal of Performance Monitoring Essay organizational development is to improve the functioning of the similes, organization itself. System renewal means that an organization can develop self-renewing characteristics.

A system approach emphasizes the wholeness of the organizational system and the interrelatedness of its subsystems. Focus on people indicates that the main concern is the human social system of the organization. The educational strategy seeks to stimulate self-renewal by changing the behavior of the individuals within the organization. Learning through experience advocates the concept of learning by actually doing. Dealing with real problems deals with a similar issue in supporting that the organization deal with existing problems.

A planned strategy implies that the effort is planned systematically. It is necessary to , have a change agent who has a vital and Electronic specific role to Liberty of Freedom, play. Finally, that one cannot change part of the system without affecting other parts of the system indicates the need for involvement of Electronic Essay top-level administrators. When we have organizational development that includes the involvement of the organizations members we can have change efforts that truly make a difference. Deming devoted much of his time to ideas concerning cooperation, participative management, and empowerment in the workplace (Levin, 1998). He advocated transforming change rather than adaptive changes saying that schools have made adaptive changes over sheffield, the years while remaining remarkably stable. According to Good and Brophy (1990) some aspects of schools allow for stability which makes it possible to develop routines.

Deming believed that transforming change was a necessity that would change the Performance Monitoring, organization into something very different than it was previously. Deming promoted several concepts that characterize organizational transformation as follows (Owens, 1998). The concept of total quality attempts to make every part as right as possible, to do it the first time, and to strive for perfection. Management responsibility speaks to the primary responsibility for the shortcomings of the Essay, organizational performance as resulting from Performance management behavior rather than workers' carelessness. Testing is not the answer indicating the need to on The, eliminate inspection on a mass basis by building equality into the product in the first place. Intrinsic motivation is important in enlisting willing workers and Electronic Performance Monitoring providing them with the similes in poems, proper tools rather than more testing. Emphasis on problem solving leads managers to enlist the expertise of the worker. The elimination of performance ratings is necessary because quality is improved through cooperation rather than competition.

Quality of organizational performance lies in placing the needs of the customer first emphasizing sensitivity to the needs of the customer. Kaizen is a Japanese word that speaks to the concept of continuous improvement, not a one-time fix. These concepts support the referencing, idea that organizational change should be undertaken with the involvement of the people working within the organization. When voice is given to those involved in the process, they will have a greater tendency to feel ownership in the organization and work in a more intrinsically motivated way. Additionally, according to Astuto, Clark, Read, McGree, and Fernandez (1994), when collaboration is used in Essay of Freedom place of competition those involved may feel they have a partnership with co-workers and administrators. Trends which affect the Electronic Performance Monitoring, process of change. Several trends have been cited that may affect the process of change as we know it. These trends will be areas of concern over the next few years as society learns how instrumental they will be to our organizational infrastructures. They include the of Women Essay, communications revolution, shifts in the intellectual division of labor, shifts in the funding streams of education, and demographic shifts and accessibility (Ward, 2000). The communications revolution includes the application of the Internet to Performance Essay, educational processes. The uses of the Internet have expanded dramatically over the past several years as evident by the rising use of the Internet to offer instructional enhancement.

We will have to determine which aspects of this digital revolution will ultimately benefit our students and our institutions. The shifts in character the intellectual division of labor have come about because of the capacity to communicate digitally over vast distances. For example, instead of Performance Essay collaborating with colleagues across the campus, individuals often will collaborate with colleagues across the world. This leaves one wondering what the social impact will be when people communicate digitally instead of face-to-face. There has been a major shift in free the funding streams of higher education. Educational organizations are receiving less revenue from sources such as tax dollars and tuition. Electronic Performance Monitoring Essay? These colleges will be looking for other ways to gain revenue in the near future, which will, quite possibly, extend into the world of business and similes in poems commerce. Finally, there have been shifts in accessibility.

This means that the university will increasingly serve a diverse population and must have a diversity of faculty, staff, and student populations in order to be truly representative of our society. This will also enhance the possibility that organizations will consist of individuals who take ownership in their work. In order to deal adequately with these trends and those that will emerge in the next few years, we should attempt to explore their possibilities rather than exploiting their potentials toward our own short-term gain. For example, some organizations are attempting to put as many courses as possible online in an effort to attain more students. While online courses are probably very useful, this concept should be explored fully before supporting a proposal to shift all our educational activities to the Internet. In supporting this, Shoemaker (1998) indicated that it is necessary to continue to grow but that problems that need to be considered include faculty power struggles, tenure, diversity issues and budget and space issues. The way change occurs is constantly changing. Furthermore, the change processes people perceive as effective are changing.

Upon entering the 21 st century, many believe that in Performance Monitoring Essay order for change processes to have a lasting, positive effect, all parties must be participative in terms of involvement. This philosophy is supported throughout this paper. Transformational change is probably more representative of what today's society is looking for Electronic Monitoring Essay rather than developmental and transitional change. This is because when those involved in the organization influence the decisions to Performance, change and how that change should come about, there is a greater possibility that change will be supported on ethical theory, a continuous basis. There is also a greater likelihood that changes which take place may be successfully spread throughout the system and to other systems. In further support of this theme, both empirical-rational and normative-reeducative strategies seem to be better alternatives because of the higher level of involvement of those in the organization. When we have organizational development that includes the participation of its members, we accentuate the possibility of change within that organization. When voice is given to those involved in the process they will have a greater tendency to feel ownership in the organization. Finally, in order to deal adequately with recent and Essay coming trends affecting higher education we should attempt to explore their possibilities rather than exploit their potentials.

Technology can greatly enhance what we do in higher education provided that we do not commit to philosophies that diminish the integrity of the educational process while attempting to take advantage of Electronic Monitoring Essay our new world of changing technology.
